Girls just want to have fun -- and play football

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- A sixth grader's wish to play football has turned into a discrimination investigation.

Kindle Rhodes, a female student just starting out at Beckley-Stratton Middle School, tells WVVA she's been wanting to play football as long as she can remember.

Kindle says she isn't the only girl who's asked to play football there.  She found out she missed tryouts for this year, but says the coach had some not-so-encouraging advice for next year.

"He said I couldn't play next year because I'd get cut.  He said he don't normally make cuts, but if I played, I would be the first one he cut," says Kindle Rhodes.

Coach Dale Stafford, the head football coach for the middle school, spoke out to WVVA too.  Due to the investigation, he said he could not comment on specifics of the conversation, but said he has had numerous girls on his teams during his 20-plus years of coaching football.

"Child safety comes into effect.  Naturally, this is a combat sport.  You know, we are hitting.  And you know, you have to take care of our youth.  And I'll just leave it at that," says Stafford.

Raleigh County Schools Central Office is investigating the matter to see if the alleged comments are in fact discrimination.
