McDowell parents charged with abuse after kids found in deplorable conditions

ASHLAND (WVVA) - Two McDowell County adults are in custody after police say their children were found living in inhumane and unsanitary conditions. Warning: Some may find the details of this story disturbing.

According to Sheriff Martin West, deputies responded to a home in the Ashland area Wednesday where Child Protective Services workers were attempting to remove children from the residence and meeting resistance from the parents.

Upon arrival, officers were shown that the children -- ages one and two -- were being held in a room in which they were handling and even eating human excrement.

The parents -- identified as 28-year-old Michael Paul Perry and 19-year-old Crystal Sidney Perry were arrested and charged with child abuse creating substantial risk of injury.

Both were arraigned with bond set at $100,000 each. They are awaiting transport to Southwestern Regional Jail.
