Family creates new scholarship funds at Bluefield College

BLUEFIELD, Va (PRESS RELEASE)-- Student-athletes, students from rural Virginia, and promising students with average grades are set to be the beneficiaries of two new Bluefield College scholarship funds created by BC alumna Peggy Emert Bickford and her husband, Steven.

The first -- the Peggy Emert Bickford Endowed Memorial Scholarship -- is designed for"average" students with at least a 2.5 grade point average from rural Virginia, including Buckingham, Cumberland, Prince Edward, Fluvanna, and Nelson counties.

"It was important for me to set this scholarship up for the average student," said Peggy. "I was an average student in high school, and Bluefield College gave me an opportunity to attend college. I am forever grateful."

Peggy said that "average" students are often overlooked and miss out on receiving vital financial aid. Without scholarship assistance, she added, they aren't afforded the same opportunity to attend college and to succeed.

"It is amazing to see what a young person can become and what they give to society when given the opportunity to learn and grow in a good Christian environment," said Peggy. "This is what I want my scholarship to provide."

A native of Buckingham County, Virginia, Peggy studied business at Bluefield College from 1969 to 1971 before beginning a long career with United States Postal Service, where she served as postmaster of the Arvonia, Virginia, Post Office for 31years.

She said she created the scholarship fund at Bluefield College because of the positive experience she had while a student at BC.

"Bluefield College gave me so much," she said. "The college helped me to grow and develop into a responsible adult. I felt that as a Christian I should be a good steward and give back and help others so they will be able to experience Bluefield College and receive a great education."

The second scholarship fund -- the Robert Steven Bickford and Peggy Emert Bickford Endowed Memorial Athletic Scholarship, envisioned by Peggy's husband, Steven -- is designed for Bluefield College student-athletes. Also a native of Buckingham County, Virginia, Steven played multiple sports in high school before earning a scholarship to play baseball at Old Dominion University.

"As a youngster, I enjoyed many outdoor activities, such as hunting, fishing and playing baseball," said Steven. "Later in life, I realized that baseball, as well as other team and individual sports, helped prepare me for a more important game -- the game of life."

After college, Steven worked 33 years for Virginia Power before retiring. Through the years, the Bickfords have continued to participate in and support team and individual sporting activities. The Robert Steven Bickford and Peggy Emert Bickford Endowed Memorial Athletic Scholarship, they hope, will provide BC student-athletes, through faith, education and participation in sports, the opportunity to enhance their skills and abilities for success in life.
