Education leaders visit McDowell County to see benefits of federal broadband grant

WAR (WVVA) -- National, state, and local education leaders visited McDowell County Wednesday to witness the benefits of a Federal Broadband Grant.

Dr. Anthony Wilhem from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), along with other education, legislative, and community leaders made a stop at Southside school in War.

The group observed how students are benefiting from high speed Internet. Southside was one of 196 West Virginia schools that received fiber from the broadband technology opportunities program grant.

State schools have been able to upgrade their connectivity allowing students to take virtual courses and blended delivery classes. They are also using online textbooks and other digital media resources.

The group also learned more about Connected, a bold, new initiative which will help West Virginia made better use of existing funds to get Internet connectivity and educational technology into classrooms.

NTIA's programs and policymaking focus largely on expanding broadband Internet access and ensuring that the Internet remains an engine for continued innovation and economic growth.
