BECKLEY (WVVA) - A new restaurant is already giving back to the community.

Panera Bread in Beckley held its ribbon cutting Tuesday morning to officially join the business community. Immediately after that, they presented a $1,500 check to the United Way of Southern West Virginia.

The money comes from customers redeeming their gift cards from a grand opening promotion.

Members of United Way say the donation is the beginning of a great partnership.

"When we were asked to partner with Panera Bread, one of the things that we used their donation for was to buy books for children and this past Saturday at the Day of Hope, we handed out 1,000 books to kids under 10," said Margaret Ann O'Neal, executive director of the United Way of Southern West Virginia. "And we were thrilled to see the looks on their faces."

Panera Bread opened for business in Beckley last week.
