Future of the Southwest Virginia Community College Investigation

RICHLANDS (WVVA) – The Tazewell County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted on August 6, 2013 for an investigation of operations at Southwest Virginia Community College.

"Some of the evidence that was presented showed the decline in enrollment and the decline in participation. Based upon all those facts and based upon the fact that I taught for Southwest Virginia Community College, we thought there were problems that needed to be resolved and we have asked Senator Puckett and Delegate Moorefield to seek an investigation," stated Jim Childress, Tazewell County Board of Supervisors.

Now, out of the board members hands, both Puckett and Moorefield say they do not see a reason for such an investigation.

Speaking with former students, they told us they were shocked that someone would request an investigation. "I don't think there is anything that Southwest is doing wrong, as far as I am concerned, this place has only gone up since I started going here," stated Alex Mays.

President Estepp says he maintains an open door policy and is willing to discuss the operations of the college with any group. "The dynamics of higher education are changing, it's completely different that they were even four or five years ago, Southwest is not immune to that. We have to react to that and we have to respect the fact that times are changing and we have to change with it."
