Clinics prescribe reading for childhood development

LEWISBURG (WVVA) -- Reach Out and Read is asking parents to read out loud to their children, and Thursday kids heard a story from a special guest.

Congressman Nick Rahall stopped by the Robert C. Byrd clinic in Lewisburg, treating kids to three stories, and handing out books afterwards.

Through Reach Out and Read kids all over the country are receiving over 6.5 million books a year.

"I try to instill in them an excitement to read more.  Go to the library.  Use those valuable resources that are at our disposal and just reach out and just learn all you can," says Rahall.  "I know one of the young students here this morning said, I know all that, and I said, you don't know everything! You can always learn something."

Reach Out and Read reports research that reading and being read to is important for mental development, especially in ages five and under.
