Students, parents prepare for first day of school

PRINCETON, W. Va (WVVA)-- It's time to welcome the pencils, the books, and maybe even the teachers' dirty looks.

Thursday is the first day of school for many kids across the Two Virginias. Bland, McDowell, Mercer, Raleigh, Summers, and Tazewell County schools all start then.

Parents we spoke with told us it's easy to worry about their kids on their first day of class, but it's also a time to let go.

Students said there are many reasons for them to get stressed out about it, too.

"I have to go to different classes, hear the bell ring [for the first time]," said Serenity Rotenberry, who starts at Glenwood Thursday. "And," she added, "I have to try not to fall asleep when the teacher is talking."

But Deeann Booker had a different concern: "This is like your first time having this teacher. And you miss your old teacher!" she said.

The kids added that they don't like getting up early for class, but they know their education will eventually be worth it.
