Charges expected to be filed after head-on crash

SCARBRO (WVVA) - Police say charges are expected to be filed soon after a head-on collision in Fayette County that sent two people to the hospital.

The crash occurred just after 11 p.m. Tuesday on Route 16 in the Hilltop area when a Chevy pickup traveling north, driven by Clarence Coon of Rand, apparently crossed the center line and struck a Ford Escort driven by Michael Taylor of Oak Hill head-on.

Both drivers suffered minor injuries and were treated and released at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

The investigation revealed that Coon had a prior DUI conviction, and deputies at the scene stated that Coon appeared to be under the influence at the time of the accident.

Coon said he had swerved to avoid hitting an animal.

Charges have not yet been filed against Coon, but are expected to be filed later this week according to a release from the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.

The investigation is ongoing.
