SLIDESHOW: Heavy rain floods and closes local roadways

Pembroke, VA (WVVA) -- Localized heavy rain fell across the Pembroke, Pearisburg, Rich Creek, Peterstown, and Wytheville areas Thursday afternoon causing flooding.

Route 460 was closed for over an hour in both directions in the Pembroke area from a debris flow due to heavy rains. Heavy traffic delays were reported from this closure.

Several pictures were submitted to WVVA from the Rich Creek and Peterstown areas of flooded streets and parking lots.

Doppler radar estimates between 1 and 2 inches of rain fell over these areas in roughly 2 hours. However, up to 3 inches of rain was reported from viewers in Peterstown.

Ridge road in Wytheville was temporarily closed around 3:30pm Thursday due to mud and gravel spilling into the road as a result of runoff from locally heavy rain.

Showers and thunderstorms will continue Friday and into the weekend for many. The WVVA Weather Team is expecting the chance for localized heavy downpours that may lead to flooding to last through Saturday.

Remember to never drive through flooded roadways! Turn Around, Don't Drown.
