How West Virginia Ranks in Obesity

PRINCETON (WVVA) – Obesity rates have not increased or decreased for the State of West Virginia according to a new survey conducted by the Center for Disease Control.

The CDC has seen an increase in obesity over the years nationwide, especially among low-income preschoolers.

Fitness experts at the Princeton Health and Fitness Center say it's important to keep kids active and healthy.

After-School programs are offered at the Fitness Center and the coordinator of that program says they encourage parents to take advantage of this service.

The CDC says childhood obesity increases the risk for adult obesity and is associated with negative health consequences.

Examining this issue on a state by state level, the CDC surveyed 43 states.

During 2008–2011, a total of 19 states reported significant downward trends in obesity while 21 reported no significant trend.

The Commonwealth of Virginia was not surveyed.
