Blue Jays help Va. fans find $350K in unclaimed property

BLUEFIELD, Va. (NEWS RELEASE)– The Bluefield Blue Jays and the Virginia Department of the Treasury's Unclaimed Property Program are excited to announce the two organizations were able to return total assets worth $351,690.87 to fans at Bowen Field on July 29.

The sum was the result of weeks of coordination and publicity prior to the evening, encouraging fans from throughout the region to attend the minor league game and work with the visiting staff from Virginia's Unclaimed Property Program to determine if the Commonwealth was holding any assets of value for them. By the end of the evening, more than $50,000 in cash assets were discovered, alongside an additional $300,000 in investments and other securities.

"We were absolutely blown away," said Vicki Bridgeman, the Director of the Virginia Unclaimed Property Program. "The typical amount for an event this size would be more in the ten to twenty thousand dollar range, so seeing numbers like this coming up in a town of just over 5,000 people was astonishing."

"We were very excited to have had the Unclaimed Property Team come to Bowen Field for a game and we are grateful that we could be a tool for folks to find money that they did not know they had," echoed Jeff Gray, General Manager of the Blue Jays.

The Unclaimed Property Program has begun processing the individual claims as they have been returned and expects each one to take no longer than 60 days. The Program is encouraging all who attended the July 29th game to submit their claims forms as soon as possible and has representatives standing by to assist anyone who needs help completing the process.

"Our claims team wants to help the folks in Bluefield get through the whole process as quick as possible," said Bridgeman. "This is a huge find of a small town like Bluefield, so we want to make sure we get as much money back to them as fast as we can."

The Virginia Unclaimed Property Program is administered by the Virginia Department of the Treasury. An estimated one in four Virginians currently has unclaimed property and the Commonwealth is currently holding more than $1.2 billion waiting to be claimed.
