Cuccinelli presses McDonnell for Va ethics session

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Republican attorney general and gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli is pressing a reluctant Gov. Bob McDonnell to convene Virginia's General Assembly into special session to consider revising the state's porous financial disclosure laws.

Cuccinelli's appeal comes after McDonnell last week voiced general support for unspecific changes in ethics laws but no appetite for calling lawmakers into special session to enact them before his term ends in January.

McDonnell says he's returned nearly $125,000 in loans from campaign donor Jonnie Williams, who also gave his family thousands of dollars in gifts. He didn't report them because state law exempts gifts to family members from disclosure.

Cuccinelli accepted $18,000 in gifts from Williams and his company, some disclosed years later. He has said he won't return them.
