UPDATE: Fayetteville Elementary School teacher charged with battery on students

FAYETTEVILLE (WVVA) -- New details have been released regarding the Fayetteville Elementary School teacher being accused of battery.

Kathleen Wade, 57, of Hico is a kindergarten teacher at the school.

According to a criminal complaint, the first count of battery stems from an incident when Wade had taken her class to the Fayetteville Library.  Wade was attempting to break up a verbal altercation between two students, when witnesses say she smacked one student on top of the student's head, hard enough to make the student cry.

In a separate situation, the complaint says Wade was reprimanding a student for alleged theft and hit him on both of his ears.

An official statement from the Fayette County Schools reads, "The school system is aware of the criminal complaint, and while Ms. Wade is still an employee , the county will be taking steps to ensure that she is not in current contact with students."
