Water Festival underway in Summers Co.

HINTON, W. Va (WVVA)-- The Water Festival in Hinton means "summer" for people in Summers County.

Tuesday night's Queen Mermaid coronation allowed them to also formally celebrate the area's young people, while reminding everyone to help preserve the beautiful place where they live.

49th annual water festival is bringing the whole community together to have a good time.

"It's an opportunity for people to come home and enjoy the rivers and enjoy friends and neighbors that they've known for years," said the festival's chairperson, Mary Haley.

But it also brings new people to Hinton and the nearby state park.

Hinton native Candace Brown is this year's Queen Mermaid, a title that holds much weight in the area.  She says she's excited to wear the crown.

"I've always looked up to the older mermaids when I was little, so it means a lot," she said.

The rest of her court was also honored at the event.
