Raleigh Co. Schools lead W. Va. with new technology

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- A southern West Virginia county will be leading the state when it comes to technology when it comes to technology starting this fall.

Raleigh County has a multi-million dollar contract with Apple, providing all students in grades three through 12 with iPads.  Younger students will also have access to the technology, but with some limitations.

Tuesday, tech-savvy teachers were trained on a new online grading system called Engrade, allowing them, along with parents and students to access grades in real time.

Lisa Adkins is a speech pathology for the schools in the Lester area and a mom to two kids in the district.  She says even from the parent side, she's looking forward to using features in Engrade.

"Just the opportunity to interact with the teachers, to know that when I send a message, that's going to their teacher, and they're going to receive it promptly, I think that's a good tool to have," says Adkins.

August 8 and 9 all teachers across the district will be trained on the technology.
