Energy secretary: Obama committed to role for coal

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz says the administration is committed to coal having a role in the national energy strategy, and he points to research spending as proof.

During a visit to the National Energy Technology Laboratory in Morgantown, Moniz said Monday the Energy Department has invested more than $6 billion in clean coal technology.

The focus is mainly on capturing, storing and reusing carbon.

But Moniz says he and President Barack Obama both believe the nation must prepare for a low-carbon economy, so scientists must help make the use of fossil fuels cleaner.

Moniz spoke to hundreds of employees at the lab, and to those who watched remotely from research sites in Pittsburgh, Albany, Ore., and in small offices in Anchorage, Alaska, and Sugar Land, Texas.
