Lawyer: Ferrante wasn't fleeing

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The attorney for a University of Pittsburgh researcher charged with killing his neurologist wife with cyanide says his client wasn't fleeing police when he left Florida -- he was simply driving back to Pennsylvania to surrender.

Instead, West Virginia State Police stopped 64-year-old Dr. Robert Ferrante on Thursday night. He's being held in that state until he can be extradited to Pennsylvania to face a charge of criminal homicide in the April 20 death of his wife, Dr. Autumn Klein. The extradition process is expected to take a few days.

Allegheny County officials says Ferrante left St. Augustine, Fla., on Thursday after learning Pittsburgh police were coming to arrest him. But defense attorney William Difenderfer says he simply told Ferrante to drive back to Pittsburgh to surrender.
