Fayette man arrested on attempted murder charge

OAK HILL (WVVA) - A Fayette County man facing a an attempted murder charge after allegedly hitting another man with a car in June was arrested Thursday.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Department arrested Jack Stevens of Oak Hill Thursday morning. Stevens is accused of hitting a man with a vehicle after a fight in Scarbro in early June.

Police say the man Stevens allegedly fired a gunshot that wounded a female occupant of Stevens' vehicle.

Minor injuries were reported to all involved in the June incident.

Following is the original press release issued after the June 1 incident:

Two individuals were injured during a fight in the Scarbro area of Fayette County last night. Sheriff Steve Kessler released the following information concerning this incident:

At approximately 11:00 pm on Saturday, June 1, 2013 notification was received through the Fayette County 911 Center of a fight in progress with shots fired in the area of Wingrove Hill Road in Scarbro, WV. It was further reported that an individual had been struck by a vehicle during this fight and that some of the involved parties may have fled from the scene in a white Ford Mustang convertible. Several Sheriff's Deputies responded to the scene and Troopers from the Oak Hill Detachment of the West Virginia State Police responded to provide assistance at the scene.

Upon arrival at the scene it was determined that one individual had been struck by a vehicle but had not apparently been seriously injured. He was transported to Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill for treatment for what have been described as "minor injuries." The vehicle that had apparently been involved in the collision with this individual had been abandoned at the scene and the occupants of this vehicle had fled from the area prior to the arrival of law enforcement. In addition to the damage caused by the crash, there also appeared to be damage to this vehicle from a close-range shotgun blast and a shotgun was found abandoned at the scene.

While officers were conducting their preliminary investigation at this scene they were notified that a female had arrived at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. It was determined that this female, who had arrived at the hospital by private transportation as opposed to an ambulance, had been involved in this earlier altercation in Scarbro. Upon arrival at Plateau Medical Center, investigators were able to determine that this female had sustained very minor wounds to her arm and side from several shotgun pellets. She was conscious and alert and these injuries were not deemed to be life-threatening.

The preliminary investigation into this matter indicates that two vehicles with multiple individuals in each vehicle had come to a private residence in the Wingrove Hill area of Scarbro and that a fight had then ensued between the individuals in these vehicles and the occupants of the residence. During this fight one of the occupants of this residence, who was armed with a shotgun, was struck by one of the vehicles and the shotgun was subsequently discharged into the vehicle, resulting in the minor injuries to one of the female occupants of this vehicle.

No criminal charges have been filed in connection with this incident at this time and none of the names of the involved individuals have been released. We can confirm that all of the individuals involved in this incident are from the local area, but no further information is being released at this time.

"We are continuing to investigate this incident in an effort to determine the exact circumstances of this incident," said Sheriff Kessler. "We have spoken with several of the involved parties and obtained statements from numerous witnesses as well. We believe that we have a fairly good picture of what occurred at this point, but the investigation is not yet complete, so we are only able to release limited details about this incident at this time."

This incident remains under investigation by Deputies J.M. Browning, S.K. Neal and R.V. Neal of the Fayette County Sheriff's Office.
