'It's a Hospice Thing' a go for Saturday

BECKLEY (NEWS RELEASE) – "It's a Hospice Thing" is set for this Saturday, as Hospice of Southern WV (HSWV) hosts a 5K Memorial Walk/Run, a Four-Person Scramble Golf Tournament, and the area's first Wing Night.

"It's exciting to see how things are coming together," said Janett Green, Executive Director, Hospice of Southern WV.  "It should be a great day and we hope the community will come out for a fun-filled evening and help support our hospice."

The 5K Memorial Walk/Run will take place at the Paul Cline Memorial Youth Sports Complex beginning with registration at 7:00 AM.  This event can be for the serious runner or for those who wish to memorialize a loved one.  Pre-registration cost is $25 and registration at the event is $35 for each participant.  Participants can choose to run in the 5K, walk the course, or walk a shorter track.  The run will begin at 9:00 AM with the walk shortly to follow at 9:10 AM.

The Golf Tournament will be held at the BrierPatch Golf Course.  It is a four-person scramble beginning with a shotgun start at 9:00 AM.  There are over 100 golfers signed up to participate with prizes awarded for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place as well as closest to the pin on all par 3's, longest putt, and straightest drive.

The Wing Night will be the first of its kind in the area.  Beginning at 5:00 PM Saturday and lasting to 10:00 PM, local restaurants will compete to see who has the best wings in Southern West Virginia.  Those attending will be able to purchase wings from local restaurants as well as vote for the People's Choice Award.  Participating restaurants will compete in three wing categories; mild, hot, and unique.  There will be musical entertainment, with Matt Brewster playing between 6:15 PM and 8:00 PM and Wade Right and the Wrong Boys performing between 8:15 PM and 10:00 PM.  There will be a celebrity wing eating contest at 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM.  There will also be various vendors offering merchandise and a variety of other food.  For the family, there will be a Kids Zone with face painting and inflatable playhouses and more.

HSWV will have memorial opportunities available on Saturday, including the sell of color-coded memorial ribbons.  A pair of ribbons may be purchased for $10.  One ribbon is a keepsake and the other will be tied to a Memorial Wreath that will be at the Bowers Hospice House.

"There is something for everyone," said Josh Jones, Hospice of Southern WV Public Relations Director.  "We encourage people to come out Saturday and help support us and the special kind of caring we strive to provide in our community."

HSWV extends a special thank you to those who have committed sponsorships – Platinum Level: First Community Bank; Gold Level: Beckley Auto Mall and WVNS; Silver Level: United Bank and Southern Communications.

For more information the public is urged to call HSWV at (304) 255-6404 or visit the website at www.hospiceofsouthernwv.org.
