Tazewell Co., others rated on food insecurity in new study

TAZEWELL, W. Va (WVVA)-- A new study finds many people across the Two Virginias are hungry, wondering when or where they'll have their next meal.

It's called "food insecurity." The study by Feeding America found nearly 5000 people in Tazewell County alone go hungry.

The director at the A Child Shall Lead Them food pantry in Tazewell, Pam Irvin, says they are seeing an average of between 5 and 7 new families coming to them for help each month.

Workers there say the hunger problem across the area may be more serious than most people realize.

Local church organizations are working to feed those in need, especially the hungry children who do without free school meals during the summer.

"There's no breakfast, there's no lunch. And there might be some dinner but maybe not," said Irvin. "[They're going to bed hungry, getting up hungry. Most of us don't even realize how serious that can be. Especially for elderly and children."

The study also rates other counties in our area on food insecurity.
