Renovations to local fast food restaurant affect local economy

BLUEFIELD Va. (WVVA)- If you frequent Bluefield, Virginia, then you may have noticed the McDonald's on Commerce Drive is undergoing a complete rebuild from the ground up.

Although it's expected to be back in a few months, we asked town leadership how the absence of business there is affecting the town.

With every transaction at the fast food restaurant, the town of Bluefield collects a 5% meals tax in addition to the annual business license tax.

Bluefield Treasurer James Hampton tells WVVA that the meals tax alone generates 1.1 million dollars in revenue for the town, but he says it will be a while before he knows how the temporary closure of such a popular place will impact the local economy

The rebuilding project is expected to take a total of 60 to 90 days.
