Scouts' service project turns them into honorary fire fighters

Posted:

SOPHIA (WVVA) -- The Boy Scouts of America continue spending time out and about in the community with service projects.

Monday, a group from Connecticut took over the Sophia Volunteer Fire Department in Raleigh County.  They cleaned and performed some maintenance on the trucks, things that sometimes the small department doesn't always have enough man power to do.

On top of that, they found out just what it takes to be a fire fighter, dream come true for many of them.  Scouts attempted to dress in the gear in under a minute like the pros are trained to do, and more.

"[We call them] mini firefighters.  Get them straightened out," says Kenneth Churning, the chief medical officer for Sophia FD.  "Up and coming firefighters I guess could be the word.  A lot of them feel like they've been inspired.  It's been nothing but a positive experience with them."

The service projects wrap up around the region Tuesday.
