W.Va. group seeks oversight of abortion industry

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- An evangelical Christian group that's suing a Charleston clinic has launched a campaign urging lawmakers to start regulating the abortion industry.

The Family Policy Council of West Virginia kicked off the effort Monday at the state Capitol in Charleston.

West Virginia's two legal abortion clinics, the Women's Health Center of West Virginia and Kanawha Surgicenter, are in Charleston.

The Department of Health and Human Resources has said there's no state agency specifically tasked with inspecting abortion clinics or providers.

The Family Policy Council filed a lawsuit last month on behalf of a woman who claims a Women's Health Center doctor performed an abortion procedure on her even though she asked him to stop.

State legislative health leaders didn't immediately respond to requests for comment on the campaign.
