Controversial film 'Oxyana' to be shown in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A controversial documentary about the regions well-documented prescription drug abuse problems will be shown at the West Virginia International Film Festival.

The Charleston Gazette reports the documentary "Oxyana" will be shown at 7 p.m. July 23 at Park Place Stadium Cinemas.

The documentary focuses on the drug epidemic in Oceana in McDowell County.

The film by director Sean Dunne won a special jury mention at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. It's been less well received in Oceana, where some residents say it painted an inaccurate picture of the area.

Its website calls Oceana a "nightmarish dystopia" and "one of God's blind spots."

A discussion will be held after the screening with West Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice Brent Benjamin and Prestera Center director of development Kim Miller.
