PRINCETON (WVVA) - New details surrounding Monday morning's deadly shooting at an apartment near Princeton have been revealed in a criminal complaint on the incident filed by police.

The complaint states that 32-year-old Steven McDonald and 23-year-old Latasha Kanode admitted to conspiring to rob and kill 44-year-old Sherry Matthews at her residence at 1031 Thornton Avenue.

Deputies arriving at the scene Monday morning found Matthews dead from two gunshot wounds.

A second victim, 41-year-old Edward Thomas, was shot in the face, but alert and able to identify the suspects to police, the complaint states.

Thomas further told police that the suspects fled in a Dodge Dakota truck.

Police located McDonald and the truck at his place of employment in the Glenwood area. He was taken to the sheriff's department for questioning and -- after initially denying involvement -- police say McDonald eventually admitted to conspiring with Kanode to commit the crime and hiding the weapon under the hood of his truck.

The weapon was recovered by sheriff's deputies.

Kanode was later found in Monroe County with her father, who brought her to the Mercer County Sheriff's Department for questioning.

Police say Kanode admitted that she and McDonald had discussed robbing and killing Matthews. She said they went to the residence to act as though they were buying pills when they killed Matthews and stole more than $11,000 in cash.

Both McDonald and Kanode face charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, robbery, burglary and conspiracy.

The suspects were arraigned Tuesday morning in Princeton. Bond hearings were scheduled for later Tuesday.

PRINCETON (WVVA) - One suspect is in custody and another is being sought by police after an early-morning shooting near Princeton left a woman dead and a man wounded.

Mercer County Sheriff Don Meadows tells WVVA News the fatal shooting occurred around 5:20 a.m. at an apartment building on Thornton Avenue, in the Lilly Grove area near Princeton.

Det. Combs says 44-year-old Sherry Matthews was shot and killed at the scene. A male who also lived at the residence, Edward Thomas, 41, was treated at a nearby hospital after being shot in the face.

One suspect, 32-year-old Steven McDonald was arrested shortly after the shooting. A second suspect, 23-year-old Latasha Kanode, was arrested later Monday evening.

Police believe that robbery was a motive in the shooting and that the suspects and victims knew each other.

Both are charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, first-degree robbery, burglary and conspiracy.
