COPY-Relay for Life kicks off in Raleigh Co.

MOUNT HOPE, W. Va (WVVA)-- Friday night kicked off Relay for Life in Raleigh County, where teams set up to camp out all night

This year's theme was a carnival, and they had fun and games planned to help celebrate life throughout the relay.

This year, their goal is to raise $110,000.  At the beginning of the relay, they had only raised $59,000.

But organizers said it's not just about raising money.  They also take time to remember the fallen, honor survivors, and give hope to those still fighting the disease.

"If someone has never been to relay, I encourage them to come once," said co-chair Diana Walker.  "I guarantee you will come forever. Your life will be changed. It's touching. They motivate you. And you try to motivate them but they motivate you."

Even though the rain threatened to wash out the event, the walkers kept on going. The event kicked off Friday at 6 in the pouring rain, but people said their spirits were not dampened.

Planned events throughout the evening, besides the classic walking, included Cancer Bingo, the Purple Glove Dance, zumba, Relay games like Pop the Polyp and Clown Relay, crowning the Relay King and Queen, and the frozen t-shirt contest.
