Boy Scouts begin their southern W. Va. excursion in Beckley

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- Before the National Jamboree kicks off, some of the Boy Scouts had a chance to explore what makes West Virginia special.  For many of them, this is their first time in the Mountain State.

"It's beautiful.  Really, really pretty out here. It's fantastic," says Jon Hoeffel, a Life Scout with Troop A324 from Colorado.

Sunday afternoon, they took over Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, learning about the area they'll be staying in for the next ten days.

"It's fun to learn about the history within West Virginia.  I actually was born in Virginia, so it's nice to see you our neighbor state and learning more about it," says Matthew Peery, an Eagle Scout, who now lives in Colorado, also from Troop A324.

"It's always good to know about where you're going and where you're at.  It's always interesting to find out about the history," says their Scout Master, John Patterson.

Troop A324 was one of many who got to go underground in Exhibition Coal Mine.  They're all looking forward to the Jamboree from the high adventure activities to meeting other scouts from across the country.
