Volunteers from across nation help to beautify region

POCAHONTAS, Va. (WVVA) - Nearly 400 teens and adults from around the country are visiting the region this week to take part in community service projects.

These volunteers have come to Bluefield and Pocahontas, Va., from as far away as Montana and Texas to repair different parts of the communities.

It's part of the Work Camps program hosted by Bluefield College.

Some of the projects include repairing homes, painting the Baptist church, and cleaning up the Pocahontas Cemetery.

Members of the group say it's rewarding to be able to travel across the country and take part in something that helps others.

"It makes me just feel good that I'm helping a community in need and this is a very historic town but not much people know about it so we're trying to get it on the map again to get people to come because it's very beautiful and historic," said volunteer Keenan Spencer.

Since its start -- the Work Camps program has utilized 300,000 volunteers.
