GREENBRIER COUNTY (WVVA) - Alpha Natural Resources has announced layoffs at four southern West Virginia mine operations.

A total of 106 workers at operations in Greenbrier, Boone, Nicholas and Raleigh counties are losing their jobs and another 83 are being offered positions at other operations, according to a release from Samantha Davison of Alpha Corporate Communications.

The release further states that shift reductions will be in place at most affected operations, while the Pocahontas Mine in Greenbrier County is being idled.

The release cites "an oversupplied global met (coal) market where prices have dropped to new lows."
