Bluefield State board votes to join new athletic conference

BLUEFIELD, W. Va (WVVA)-- A local college has been without an athletic conference for more than a year.

Thursday night, Bluefield State College has a plan of action to find a new athletic home.  Its Board of Governors voted unanimously to apply to join the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC).

School leaders believe it could save the school money and give the student-athletes peace of mind.

Women's basketball coach JJ Oliver said the school needs a conference to continue athletic excellence and keep old rivals.

"The incentives financially... and incentives with national-based awards that we qualify for now, always have to be sponsored by conferences. Things of this nature are very vital to sustaining a healthy athletic program," he said.

The college will not be immediately accepted into the GMAC conference. Their application must be approved. But officials there say this is an exciting move in the right direction.
