Local veterans to take "Their Last Chance" honor flight

BECKLEY, W. Va (WVVA)-- Some West Virginia veterans are about to embark on a journey they have wanted to make for most of their lives.

Four veterans at the Pine Lodge nursing home in Beckley, as well as their guests and caretakers, are taking an honor flight to see the veterans' memorials in Washington, DC.

But this isn't just an honor flight.

It is a TLC, or "Their Last Chance" honor flight. The veterans are in hospice care and wanted to see the memorials while there is still time.

Charlie Thomas, the Vice President of the Always Free Honor Flight-- the only honor flight group in West Virginia, said this was something they needed to plan precisely, and quickly.

"This will be their last opportunity to get the chance to go see their memorials," he said, "have their pictures taken with it and have their families get pictures of their veteran at their memorial that they'll have forever and always."

The Denver Foundation, as well as the national organization and some local businesses, are sponsoring the trip.

The group leaves early Wednesday morning from the Southern West Virginia Hospice Center in Beckley and will get to the Capitol around 11:00 AM, where their first stop is the WWII Memorial. They will be greeted by Senator Manchin and other West Virginia representatives.
