National Emergency declared by American Red Cross

Posted:

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - The American Red Cross announced a national emergency for blood on Tuesday. The need for blood has reached an all time high and the Red Cross says they see a dramatic drop in donors during June, July and August.

Troy Stiffler, a donor recruit says, "Hospitals use 200 pints of blood a day."

The Red Cross says donations through the Red Cross were down approximately 10 percent in June, resulting in about 50,000 fewer donations than expected.

On average the Red Cross must collect almost 17,000 pints of blood every day to supply patients at nearly 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country.

The process takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes to give two units of red blood cells.

But donors say it's worth it, "You have a good feeling all day long knowing you saved a life," says Moriah White who donated blood at Concord University.
