Turnpike traffic dips slightly over 4th

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Fewer motorists traveled on West Virginia's Turnpike during the July 4th holiday.

Parkways Authority general manager Greg Barr says turnpike traffic was down less than 1 percent. He said that's better than expected.

The Charleston Gazette reports that there were more than 1.4 million toll transactions during the holiday period, down about 10,100 transactions from 2012.

Barr said year-to-date travel on the Turnpike has been down about 2 percent. He said a dip in gas prices prior to the travel period may have helped pick up July 4 travel.

On the flip side, a Sunday tractor-trailer crash near Sharon probably kept many people off the highway.
