DUI arrest turns violent in Monroe County

ALDERSON (WVVA) -- A man is behind bars following an altercation with police in Monroe County.

David Bailey, 23, was arrested following a DUI stop.  Chief Jeremy Bennett said it took several officers to get Bailey into custody after the pursuit.  Bennett said that's when Bailey got violent.

He's being charged with fleeing on DUI, battery on EMS and law enforcement and obstructing officers.

"I mean it's the last thing we want to do is go hands on with anybody.  It's extremely dangerous, especially at night time with all the traffic rolling around in the middle of the road, it's the last thing you want to do is do that because there's a lot of people whose lives are at stake," says Chief Bennett.

Also according to Bennett, the department has been amping up their DUI patrol.  He says they've caught about 30 people this summer alone.
