Geotechnical drilling at Bluestone Dam

Posted:

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers announces that it will be conducting geotechnical drilling in the New River below Bluestone Dam beginning on or about July 9, 2013 and lasting through October.

A small number of holes will be drilled into the river bed to determine the geotechnical conditions in preparation for the next phase of the Bluestone Dam Safety Assurance Program.

A drilling platform will be set up at various spots to take samples, conduct technical analysis, and then refill the holes. The farthest downstream drilling will occur will be about 350 ft. below the weir. Every effort will be made to minimally impact fishing and the environment.

Members of the public may still fish, but are asked to avoid the drilling platform and observe appropriate safety measures; remembering if upstream their lines will swing toward the rig. The platform will be marked with safe distance signs for the benefit of those fishing near it. Anyone near the platform at a time it needs to move will be notified for their safety.
