Mercer Co. business closing after 104 years

*A previous version of this story read that Virginia Hardware is closing in mid-June. It is actually closing in mid-July. We apologize for the confusion.

PRINCETON, W. Va (WVVA)-- A long-time business is closing its doors in Mercer County

Virginia Hardware is going out of business after 104 years in Princeton.

Customers told WVVA the store is a staple in the Princeton area and they will be sorry to see it go.

Its owner, Ron Hart, said the tough economic times for families affected by the decline of the coal industry has made it hard for them to make ends meet.

He said closing is not something he wants to do, rather something he has to do.

"The younger generation has moved out of the area and contractors have dwindled," he said. "We've been struggling for the past couple of years and it just got to the point that we couldn't continue."

Customers we spoke with said the small hardware business appeals to them over the larger, corporate stores.

Virginia Hardware will officially close by the end of July.
