UPDATE:

In a news conference held on Friday, Sheriff Brian Hieatt stated the mother Star Adams, 20, is charged with abandonment . Monica Walker, 27, and William "Willie" Hilbert, 47, are charged with causing serious injury to a child under the age of 18 in the death of Adams' child.

Police said Walker called 911 early Wednesday morning while en route to Clinch Valley Medical Center with the unresponsive child, and an emergency room doctor declared him dead when he arrived.

Adams left her 8-month-old boy in Walker and Hilbert's care Tuesday evening, and Sheriff Hieatt said that's when the boy sustained multiple injuries. The nature of those injuries is unreleased at this time, but Hieatt said it was enough to cause doctors major concern almost immediately.

Warrants were issued on Thursday. Police also searched Walker's vehicle and two homes where they seized evidence to help them determine what happened to the child.

Hieatt said the injuries were traumatic enough not to be accidental.

"The injuries were well beyond the case of a child just getting some small accidental injuries [as children often do]," said Hieatt.

Investigators are awaiting the autopsy to determine any other charges that may be made in the case.

The child's father is already in prison for unrelated crimes.
