Coal leaders react after Obama climate change speech

BLUEFIELD, W. Va (WVVA)-- Coal industry leaders are angry and frustrated.

After President Obama reveals his plans to address climate change including new energy efficiency standards and further limiting emissions from power plants.

Some say these expectations are impossible and ill-advised and it would raise production costs for coal-burning plants.

They say this, in turn, affect the coal industry as well as consumers.

"I think it goes to the newest employed miner to the ones that have been in the industry for decades. They feel like it was a slam," said  Bill Raney, president of the WV Coal Association. "It was very very shortsighted to do that because truly this country was built on the backs of the coal industry."

The president wants to make energy production cleaner and some fear this will only increase demand for alternative energy and push the coal industry out.
