UPDATE: Tennis Maynard Indicted on Federal Firearms Violations

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A Mingo County man accused in the fatal shooting of a sheriff has been indicted on federal firearms violations.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said Tuesday a federal grand jury in Charleston indicted 37-year-old Tennis Maynard of Delbarton on charges of possession of a firearm by an individual who had been committed to a mental institution and making a false statement in acquisition of a firearm.
Maynard is accused in the April shooting death of Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum.
Federal law prohibits the sale of firearms and ammunition to certain individuals with a history of mental illness.
According to the 10-count indictment, Maynard is accused of making a false statement on federal gun permit applications on five separate occasions.
The charges carry a total punishment of 75 years upon conviction.
