JONBEN (WVVA) - A Raleigh County man charged in connection with the death of a 13-month-old was shot dead Friday morning after firing at sheriff's deputies, police say.

Charles Warren Wickline, 46, was fatally shot in the chest by a sheriff's deputy after fleeing from home confinement officers, then firing at sheriff's deputies who were searching for him, according to a release from the Raleigh County Sheriff's Office.

Wickline was on home confinement as a condition of his bond in connection with the death of a 13-month old child at a home on Bacontown Road last July.

Investigators said Wickline backed over the toddler with his car.

In January, Wickline pleaded not guilty to the charge of child neglect resulting in death and had been on home confinement since.

When home confinement officers went to his home for a check, police say Wickline pulled a gun on them and fled the scene on a four-wheeler.

Wickline was located in the Willibet Hollow Road in Jonben around 5 a.m. Friday. Police say Wickline attempted to hide behind a tree and fired at the deputies.

A Raleigh County Sheriff's Deputy returned fire, striking Wickline in the chest.

CPR was performed on Wickline by deputies and a family member until an ambulance arrived. Wickline was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
