HINTON, W. Va (WVVA)-- A ribbon-cutting for the New River Parkway today officially opens the road to drivers.

Some say it has been a long time coming.

The road will eventually go from I-64 along the New River, through Hinton and down to Pipestem. 0fficials said it's an important road...hopefully bringing more people to the national parks.

But the goal also includes tourism to the local towns, while providing a scenic view on the way.

New River Parkway Authority Superintendent Trish Kicklighter said, "We can't protect the parks by ourselves, we have to have to have partners and we have to have advocates. And one of the ways to grow those is for people to experience the parks, to actually get out there and enjoy it."

She said the road will help people access those areas.

"It's our hope then to grow enthusiasts to support our national parks," she added.
