Greenbrier County Sheriff's Department investigating drowning at Blue Bend

GREENBRIER COUNTY (WVVA) -- The Greenbrier Sheriff's Department is investigating a drowning at Blue Bend.

Lieutenant White with the Sheriff's Department says members of the Greenbrier dive team found the body of 53-year-old Thomas Michael Richter of White Sulphur Springs Friday morning at 10:45 a.m.

A forest service worker at Blue Bend discovered personal belongings including a wallet with a driver's license belonging to Richter Thursday and contacted Greenbrier County 911. The information was then passed along to the Sheriff's Department.

Richter's brother was contacted and was able to confirm Thomas did not go to work and was not at home.

The Sheriff's Department attempted to get a dive team together on Thursday, but due to storms passing through the area, that plan was stopped.

The dive team conducted a search Friday morning and found Richter's body. His brother was able to confirm the identity.

The body was taken to the State Medical Examiner's office in Charleston.

The incident is still being investigated by the Greenbrier Sheriff's Department.

No foul play is suspected at this time.
