ROANOKE (WVVA) - Virginia State Police say that at least two people are dead in a fiery crash that shut down I-581 in Roanoke Wednesday evening, according to NBC affiliate WSLS.

WSLS reports that the crash -- which involved multiple vehicles and two tractor trailers -- occurred near the Valley View Mall exit around 5 p.m.

The WSLS report says State Police believe a maroon car traveling north triggered the accident by veering into a tractor-trailer before crashing into the median.

The impact of the crash sent the tractor trailer into the southbound lanes, where it struck another truck.

Two other vehicles also became involved in the crash.

Drivers of both tractor trailers are reported as dead according to WSLS. At least two other motorists were transported to the hospital -- including the driver of the maroon car.

VDOT said Wednesday evening that all lanes of 581 were closed and traffic was being detoured at Exit 3 southbound, Exit 4 north.
