Temporary rumble strips are being tested in highway work zones in four Southwest Virginia counties.

A spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation says the tests are an effort to improve safety for workers in work zones.

The strips are beveled on each side to make them safe for motorcycles as well as vehicles to travel over. Three strategically placed strips generate the same sound and vibration as milled strips, alerting motorists to slow down and pay attention to what's happening in the work zone.

The strips are being tested in work zones in Washington, Buchanan, Russell and Tazewell Counties.
