W.Va. gives Internet routers to Concord, other schools

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Universities and colleges are getting high-capacity Internet routers that the state bought with federal stimulus funds.

The routers are part of a $126 million project to expand high-speed Internet access statewide. A legislative audit criticized the state for choosing the high-capacity routers to create network hubs at smaller facilities, such as public schools, libraries and community institutions.

The Charleston Gazette reports that the state recently distributed about two dozen routers to community and technical colleges. Another 20 routers were given to Marshall University.

Routers also were distributed to West Virginia University, Glenville State College and Concord University.

WVNET executive director Dan O'Hanlon says community and technical colleges need the routers to rebuild their information technology infrastructure. The schools split from their four-year college affiliates several years ago.
