Local city discusses changing traffic patterns

BLUEFIELD, W. Va (WVVA)-- Traffic patterns could change in the city of Bluefield. A proposed ordinance would change traffic flow on Commerce and Raleigh Streets to one-way.

City leaders said the switch would make it easier to travel downtown and allow them to add diagonal parking instead of the parallel spaces there now.

But some people expressed concerns about the proposal at a public hearing on Tuesday, citing the dangerous slope on commerce street.

"You're coming down a hill and it's a sharp turn [on Commerce]..." said John Shott, who has a law office on that street. "It's banked in a way that if the road is the least bit slippery, either through ice or water, it's hard to maintain control of your car or truck and you could easily slide toward the curb."

Others said if the roads are one-way, there is no way for people to turn around if the hill seems intimidating.

Another suggestion was to add a "no left turns" sign on Commerce so drivers would be deterred from making a dangerous turn.

At their meeting Tuesday, the board decided to table the proposal until they could do more research using the public's suggestions. They plan to discuss their findings at the next board meeting.
