Paul Powell Paul Powell

Princeton Police Chief Paul Powell has retired in the midst of an internal investigation.

The retirement is effective June 7th.

Powell had been on administrative leave while as claims of "improper protocol" were investigated.

Lieutenant J.W. Howell was appointed acting chief.

City Manager Elke Doom says Howell will remain in that position for the next six months.

She adds at that point she will review the progress of the department and determine if a nationwide search for a permanent chief begins or if city leaders promote from within.

Powell was named Princeton police chief in January 2012 after the retirement of Chief Bill Harman.
