W.Va. Turnpike wrecks prompt safety moves

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The West Virginia Parkways Authority is taking steps to improve safety on the West Virginia Turnpike following several accidents.

On Friday, two separate accidents snarled traffic for several hours. A truck tipped over near the Sharon exit and another truck smashed through a guard rail and went over a hill near the Paint Creek Exit. Another truck turned over near the Mahan exit on Thursday.

Parkways authority general manager Greg Barr tells WSAZ-TV that he believes a lot of the problems are due to a slippery road caused by rain mixing with asphalt oil and drivers going too fast for road conditions.

This week, the road surface will be tested for friction quality and adjustments will be made if needed. State police patrols will be stepped up.
