AARP opposes water rate hike in W.Va.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The West Virginia chapter of the AARP is opposing a proposed rate increase that West Virginia American Water says it needs to recoup money spent on massive system upgrades.

But the seniors' advocacy group says the proposed 20 percent rate increase would hurt 250,000 state residents.

The state Public Service Commission will hold statewide public hearings later this month on the company's proposal filed in December.

The water company says the rate hike would increase the average consumer's bill by about $8.13 per month, but the AARP estimates a $10.49 monthly increase.

AARP spokesman Tom Hunter told the Charleston Daily Mail that no matter specific number, the increase still would hurt low-income consumers.

As of mid-week, state regulators had received about 270 petitions opposing the rate hike.
